One of the challenges when creating charts and graphs is deciding which colors to use for the different data. The charts and graphs need to have colors that are both meaningful and look good.
The colors used not only need to look good together but be meaningful to the user.
This article provides some color schemes for charts and graphs that will help when choosing colors. Hex color codes are displayed for each color. You can also get the RGB code by hovering over each color.
The three groups of color schemes are SAP Colors, Color Brewer, and Microsoft Excel color palettes.
By placing the colors in a grid, a color scheme can be created by choosing cells of the grid in a particular order depending on the type of color scheme you are going for.
Each color scheme has a recommended maximum number of colors to use and, with the exception of monochromatic, the best type of charts for the color scheme.

The Color Brewer Color Schemes are a group of color schemes that are useful when displaying data on maps. These color schemes are divided into three main types:
- Sequential
- Data that is sequential in nature where the lighter colors represent data with lower values and darker colors represent data with higher values.
- Diverging
- Data that lends itself to extreme high and low values.
- Qualitative
- Data that is categorical in nature i.e. ranges of income
