Migrating a Component to Joomla 1.5

Introduction

Joomla! 1.5 RC4 has been out since December and, thanks to a lot of hard work from the Joomla! team and the Joomla! community, it is close to being considered stable enough for production-level sites. One of the problems with any application that is totally redesigned as Joomla! 1.5 has been is that any applications written to interact with it will likely have to be redesigned also. In the case of Joomla! 1.5, it is necessary to rewrite components, modules, and mambots (now called plugins). I realize that the Joomla! team was smart enough to think about backward compatibility and include a legacy mode that could be enabled if needed. But, if you want to take advantage of all the new features that 1.5 has to offer, why would you do that? I thought it might be helpful to others if I documented my experience converting a client's web site from Joomla! 1.0.13 to 1.5RC4.
